Interview with The Station: ‘People manage to hear so many different bands in our sound!’
Newbury-based band The Station is gearing up to release their next single, ‘Seeking Valid Appreciation’, which will come out some time next month.
The Station comprises twin brothers Dylan and Louie Morris and school friend Josh Hensby. Interestingly, the band has an unconventional structure, without a set frontman: ‘We all play guitar, drums and bass,’ Dylan Morris explained. ‘Whoever writes the song, sings it! So I sing on ‘I Say Hello’ (their debut single) but Louie’s singing on ‘Seeking Valid Appreciation’.
As the lyrics go: ‘Seeking valid appreciation from a disunited nation, I’m looking for the way that you found me, silver tarnished expectations, ready salted recommendations, the problems fade away, today, ooh la la la…oh la la la…’
Interestingly, people can’t agree on who The Station sound like: ‘People manage to hear so many different bands in our sound!,’ Morris said. ‘Some people say we sound like The Clash. Somebody else said we’re a mix of Squeeze and The Holloways. So I had a listen again with that in mind and I could hear The Holloways a little bit.’
‘Back then, we had no idea what was coming this year’
‘I Say Hello’ came out last month having been recorded back in March along with two other songs.
‘We wrote it about a year ago, it’s a summery song,’ Morris said. ‘Back then, we had no idea what was coming this year. It’s a good one to dance around to.’
‘I Say Hello’ came out just as he was hoping: ‘A lot of songs are more down but we don’t do this to be sad. We wanted to capture something else, to be more upbeat.’
The band has also recorded ‘Start Again’, on which Dylan also sings, which he described as having a similar feel to ‘I Say Hello’. ‘It’s about that feeling that everything was better in the past, even if it wasn’t really,’ he said.
Morris is a big fan of music from the 70’s, such as Mott The Hoople. ‘We’re influenced by The Jam and The Beatles as well. Josh likes different stuff to me and Louie – he like bands like the Foo Fighters.’
The band will be putting on a socially distanced gig tomorrow (29 August) near their home town. If he could collaborate with anyone, Morris goes for The Beatles: ‘It would be interesting working with The Beatles,’ he said. ‘If you think about it, most songs are derivative of theirs in some way. I’d love to hear them play our songs.’
