Interview: Cellos to release lockdown songs

County Durham-based four piece indie rock band Cellos is to put out some songs they recorded in lockdown.

Cellos was formed in 2019 by songwriters and friends Niall Fenwick (vocals) and Joe Teasdale (guitar). It also consists of Jack Walker (bass) and Harry Mason (drums). The group, fronted by Fenwick, released their debut EP Sea or Sky in October 2019.

‘We’re always writing songs, even on lockdown,’ Teasdale said. ‘There are a few songs we’ve recorded in lockdown that we’ll put online in the next two or three months, including ‘The River’ and ‘In Your Head’, which are really different to our songs on Sea or Sky.’

‘The River’, written by Fenwick, has big guitar solos ‘that sound like Oasis’, according to Teasdale. It also has lines such as ‘I’ll wait on the other side of the river, I know it’s not the promised land I said I’d deliver’.

‘We’d like to find someone to play the violin on that one,’ he said. ”In Your Head’ is a catchy tune with jangly guitars. Niall wrote it about having trouble sleeping but it’s still optimistic and upbeat. This one is influenced by The Smiths and Stone Roses.’
